What do I when moving into a home with a switch hold from the previous occupant?

Sometimes, the location where you’re moving may have a switch hold from the previous occupant. Switch holds are the result of unpaid bill amounts from incomplete deferred payment plans.

You, as the new occupant, are not responsible for these charges and can switch the home into your name by submitting a New Occupant Statement to BKV Energy. We can submit this form to your regional utility on your behalf. When emailing this form to BKV Energy at [email protected], please include a copy of one of the following forms as proof of your move:

  • Signed Lease, showing the date of occupancy with signatures
  • Closing Documents, from the home’s sale
  • Notarized Affidavit of Landlord

What is a fixed-rate electricity plan?

A fixed-rate electricity plan has an energy charge (per kilowatt-hour) that is locked in for the duration of a contract. That means the energy charge does not change during the contract. Even when market prices change, your rate stays the same, which makes budgeting much easier.

Please note that even on a fixed-rate plan, your electricity bill will not be the same every month. While your rate stays the same, your kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage changes, plus there are TDU delivery charges and taxes.

We recommend Texans go with a fixed-rate plan to protect them from high variable rates during the summer months.

What is a variable-rate electricity plan?

A variable-rate electricity plan has an energy charge (per kilowatt-hour) that is subject to change month to month. It fluctuates due to changes in electricity prices. Electricity prices are impacted by weather, seasonality, supply, demand, and other factors. If market rates drop, then your variable rate energy charge may drop, but high temperatures and high demand can cause the energy charge to increase. Variable rates are often very expensive during the summer, which can lead to high bills.

How do I choose a plan?

Enter your zip code. Browse our available electricity plans. Choose the plan with the term length and renewable energy percentage that best fits your budget and lifestyle. Fill out and submit your information. We’ll handle the rest from there. Get started >>

After I sign up, how long until my power is turned on?

In most homes or apartments with existing service from another provider, we can switch you over the same day. If you’re moving to a new home or apartment, our team will work with you to get you set up and running in as little as three days.

If you’ve requested same-day service, your power will be turned on the day you applied for power with BKV Energy as long as you have met any potential identity verification and service deposit requirements. Same-day service requests are available Monday-Friday as long as you submit your application before 3:30PM Central and meet all application requirements.

Billing and Payments

Why did my bill amount change from last month?

Your energy usage (kilowatt-hours or kWh) will vary from month to month. Typically, usage is heavier in the summer and winter months since air conditioning and heating are two of the heaviest load factors for power draw.

When will I get my first bill?

Your home’s billing cycle is determined by your regional TDU (utility) company’s meter read cycle. This could be up to 35 days after you begin service with BKV Energy.

How can I view my bill?

Customers can view their bills online by logging into their account on the BKV Energy customer portal. You will be able to receive your bill using your preferred bill delivery method, which can be via email and/or physical mailing to your billing address.

Sustainability

Why does sustainable energy matter?

For our 100% renewable energy plans, we source and provide sustainable energy for the future—yours, ours, everyone’s. If we don’t make a change in how the world procures energy today, it’ll be that much harder tomorrow. Sustainable energy not only makes a positive impact in the world, but it will save you and us money in the long term.

What’s the difference between sustainable, renewable and green energy?

Sustainable energy provides power today without sacrificing the ability to provide it in the future.

Renewable energy taps an unlimited resource that will theoretically never run out.

Green energy uses natural resources like light, wind, water and others to provide energy without any carbon emissions.

As we work toward net zero emissions, we focus on providing reliable energy today that is sustainable for the future. Even with the growth of renewable energy, there will remain a need for dispatchable and efficient generation. As older, dispatchable generation is retired, highly efficient gas plants, like those operated by BKV, will be the primary dispatchable generation that provides the grid stability and reliability. We know that small steps in the right direction will get us there faster than waiting years to make one large leap.

What is a Renewable Energy Certificate?

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are instruments that certify the bearer owns one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from a renewable energy resource.
