Italy, Texas—a small rural town in North Texas—offers a quiet, community-oriented lifestyle marked by low living costs, affordable housing, and a strong connection to the region’s agricultural roots. Its strategic location along Interstate 35E, roughly halfway between Dallas and Waco, makes Italy an appealing option for individuals and families looking for space, privacy, and easy access to urban employment centers while maintaining a rural setting.
The housing market in Italy is modestly priced, with a mix of single-family homes, ranch-style properties, and larger plots of land, making it especially attractive for buyers seeking more acreage or space for homesteading and agricultural use. The town’s slower pace of life and small population create a close-knit, supportive community environment.
Italy’s economy is primarily driven by agriculture, logistics, education, and local business services. Key employers include Stafford Logistics, Monolithic Constructors—a manufacturer known for its innovative dome construction—and the Italy Independent School District. These institutions provide a steady employment base for residents while supporting the local tax base and infrastructure.
The town experiences a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers—July and August highs regularly reaching 96°F—and mild winters that allow for outdoor activity most of the year. While the summer heat is intense, the region’s mild winters balance out the climate for year-round livability.
Public services in Italy are sufficient for day-to-day needs, including municipal utilities, local schools, and basic healthcare access. However, residents typically travel to nearby cities such as Waxahachie, Ennis, or Dallas for larger retail centers, advanced medical services, and entertainment venues.
For those seeking a rural lifestyle with strong community ties, affordable property, and reasonable access to major highways and urban job markets, Italy, Texas presents a practical and peaceful alternative to the fast pace of metro-area living.
Italy is located in Ellis County approximately 45 miles south of Dallas, is a rural community defined by its agricultural roots, small-town character, and strong civic pride. With a population just over 2,000, Italy operates on a hyper-local scale, where community events, school spirit, and neighborly connection form the foundation of daily life.
The local economy is anchored in agriculture—particularly cattle and crop farming—alongside small businesses that support the town’s essential services. Italy is perhaps most widely recognized for its unique Globetrotter Dome, the geodesic, dome-shaped high school gymnasium that stands as both an architectural curiosity and a community symbol.
Though small in scale, Italy hosts annual events such as the Italy Fall Festival and various school-based celebrations that draw residents together and reinforce a strong community fabric. The city’s proximity to I-35E enables straightforward access to larger job markets in Dallas, Waxahachie, and Hillsboro, making it a viable home base for commuters seeking rural living with urban reach.
Local dining options include longstanding favorites like Downtown Italy Café, family-owned BBQ joints, and food trucks that serve the community during events. While nightlife is minimal, the town prioritizes family-centered living, local school sports, church activities, and civic involvement.
Living in Italy, Texas means trading density for space, noise for quiet, and anonymity for connection. It’s a lifestyle marked by affordability, safety, and simplicity—ideal for those who value rural independence while staying within driving distance of metropolitan infrastructure.

Electricity providers in Italy use complex plans that can drive up costs. Discounted rates at certain hours, bill credits, or wholesale pricing often come with hidden fees or penalties. Deviating from strict usage targets can result in higher bills. To avoid surprises, consumers should opt for fixed-rate plans with clear pricing.

Affordable plans available, which is very helpful in the DFW area, also they are a company that values their customers and incentives them for their loyalty and makes sure they are taken care of! I’ve had a great year using the company, and just renewed for another 12 months of service with them!
Just been with BKV Energy for one month. Switch from last provider was seamless. BKV Energy website was intuitive, easy navigation. AutoPay occurred on “Due Date”. I would like to see an option for me to be able to set the auto pay to happen sooner after the invoice date, soon after I review the bill. I was with my last provider for 25 years. I hope BKV can provide me the best rates for the next 25 years.
