Houston’s utility company: CenterPoint

Houston is a deregulated city, which means you have the power to choose your electricity provider. However, the delivery and transmission is handled by CenterPoint no matter which provider you choose.

If you experience a power outage, contact CenterPoint to report the incident and find more information.

There are two main categories of charge you will find on your electricity bill: energy charge and delivery charges. Energy charge is what you pay to your electricity provider, such as BKV Energy. Delivery charges are paid to your regional utility, CenterPoint, for managing the power lines and repairing outages.

Current CenterPoint delivery charges are $4.90 per month and 5.1461¢/kWh.

Types of electricity plans in Houston

While searching for electricity in Houston, you will find multiple types of energy plans. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Fixed rates: Lock in your energy charge for the duration of the contract, even when market prices increase or decrease. Fixed-rates offer stability and predictability, but if you decide to cancel early you may be required to pay an early termination fee (ETF).
  • Variable rates: Month-to-month plans with no contract, and the rate is subject to change each month. They offer increased flexibility because you can cancel whenever without penalty, but they do not offer protection from price volatility.
  • Time-of-use: Time-of-use plans offer varying rates based on the time of day or day of week. Free nights and free weekends are common examples. We consider these plans marketing gimmicks because the rate when power is not “free” is very, very expensive.
  • Bill credit: Bill credit plans offer money back when you use the “right” amount of power. Use the wrong amount, and your bill will be very expensive compared to a regular fixed-rate plan.

At BKV Energy, we recommend going with a simple fixed-rate plan without time-of-use or bill credit gimmicks.

Our flagship plan, Bluebonnet, comes with the choice of term length between 12, 24, and 36 months (we often offer even more term lengths than those three). The Bluebonnet plan has no base charges and no minimum usage fees. Choose between 29% or 100% renewable energy.
