What Happens When Your BKV Energy Plan is Up for Renewal
4 minute read • Last update July 2026

In this article
BKV Energy sends renewal notices via email or text message at 90, 60, 30, 15, 7, and 3 days before your current contract expires, and shows a renewal pop-up reminder in your online customer portal account. These notices and reminders stop as soon as you select and confirm a renewal plan offer.
If you don’t choose a plan before your contract expires, Texas law requires that we move you to a month-to-month plan automatically. The default month-to-month plan is typically more expensive than a renewal plan that you actively select yourself.
Our renewal plans (not the default month-to-month plan) are never marked up; they are priced the same as our new-customer plans.
Here’s more detail on how exactly the BKV Energy electricity plan renewal process works, from your first renewal notice to your new contract.
When you become eligible to renew your plan
You become eligible to renew your electricity plan 90 days before the end of your current contract. BKV Energy sends written notice ahead of your contract’s expiration date so you have plenty of time to review your renewal plan options before your service defaults to a month-to-month default rate.
BKV Energy sends renewal notices on a fixed schedule so you have multiple opportunities to act:
- 90 days before your contract ends
- 60 days before your contract ends
- 30 days before your contract ends
- 15 days before your contract ends
- 7 days before your contract ends
- 3 days before your contract ends
Each notice informs you of how many days are remaining until your contract expires, the date your contract expires, and provides a link that allows you to review your renewal plan offers.
These notices will arrive via email, text message, or through pop-up reminders in your customer portal account.
What happens after you select a renewal plan
As soon as you choose a renewal plan, the 90/60/30/15/7/3-day renewal notices and portal pop-up stop. You will not receive an further reminders about your contract’s expiration.
Your new contract term and rate take effect starting on your current plan’s end date, and your electricity service will continue without any interruption.
There’s no gap in coverage and nothing further for you to do.
You will see your new plan and rate reflected in your customer portal account going forward.
What happens if you don’t renew your service
If your contract reaches its expiration date and you haven’t selected a new plan, BKV Energy is required by Texas law to place you on a default month-to-month plan, sometimes called a “holdover” or “rollover” plan.
This is not a BKV Energy policy choice. This is mandated under Public Utility Commission of Texas rules so that your electricity service is never disconnected simply because a contract term ended.
Before your electricity service is moved to a default month-to-month plan, you’ll receive contract expiration notices to remind you to actively select a renewal plan offer.
If you are moved to a default month-to-month plan, you can switch to a new fixed-rate BKV Energy plan or another provider at any time, without an early termination fee.
The bottom line is that your power will remain on, even if you do not choose a renewal plan.
Keep in mind that default month-to-month plans are typically priced higher than actual renewal plans because they have variable rates that can move with the market. These plans exist to keep your service running and are not meant for long-term service.
Selecting a renewal plan during your renewal window is highly recommended to secure a lower fixed-rate.
BKV Energy does not markup renewal plan offers
Many Texas electricity providers charge existing customers more to renew than they charge brand-new customers for the same plan.
BKV Energy does not mark up renewal plans. New and returning customers are offered the same rates.
When your plan comes up for renewal, the fixed-rate plans we offer are priced the same as what a new customer would be offered for that plan on that day.
We price renewal customers and new customers identically, plan for plan.
This pricing promise applies specifically to the renewal plan offers, not the default month-to-month plan which is a variable rate set independently of any new-customer offer.
