Moving to Texas from Canada: What You Need to Know

Why moving to Texas from Canada is becoming more popular

Texas continues to attract Canadians with its sunny climate, business-friendly economy, and zero state income tax. With a lower cost of living and robust job growth in major metros, the Lone Star State offers a welcoming environment for northern neighbors.

According to StatsCan and U.S. migration data, Canadian emigration to the U.S. has increased by over 12 percent in recent years, signaling a growing trend of cross-border relocation.

Key differences in daily life between Canada and Texas

Once you’ve arrived, daily life in Texas feels refreshingly different.

Texans enjoy a lower average cost of living, especially when it comes to housing. While a Toronto condo might cost over $800,000, the same budget in Texas could get you a spacious family home in suburbs like Frisco or Round Rock.
Taxes also differ—Texas has no state income tax, allowing more take-home pay.
Healthcare is private, so securing insurance is essential, but there are many plans to choose from.
You’ll also find a diverse food culture, warm community values, and plenty of local events celebrating everything from music to rodeos.
Compared to Canadian winters, the weather is hot and sunny, ideal for those ready to trade snow boots for sunglasses.

Energy costs in Texas vs Canada

Energy pricing is another area where Texas stands out. Unlike most Canadian provinces that operate under government-regulated energy systems, Texas has a deregulated electricity market.

This gives you the freedom to shop for plans that best fit your usage and budget. Competitive pricing often leads to cost savings over time. With BKV Energy, you can enjoy clear, upfront pricing and reliable service without the confusion of hidden fees.

How to choose an electricity provider in Texas

Look for providers that offer transparent pricing, no hidden fees, and flexible contract terms. BKV Energy makes it easy to compare plans designed to match your usage and budget, so you can feel confident in your choice from day one.

What Canadians need to legally move to Texas

Before packing your bags, it’s important to understand the legal requirements for Canadians moving to Texas. While Canada and the U.S. have strong ties, relocating permanently still involves proper documentation. Here’s what you’ll need:

Work Visa (TN, H-1B, or L-1): For employment through a U.S. company
Investor Visa (E-2): For Canadians investing a substantial amount in a U.S. business
Green Card: Often sponsored by an employer or family member
Social Security Number (SSN): Required for work and many services
U.S. Driver’s License: Typically needed within 90 days of establishing residence

The U.S. Department of State and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) provide up-to-date information on eligibility and applications. It’s advisable to consult an immigration attorney for personalized guidance.
