Who Is My Electricity Provider?

If you live in Texas, figuring out who your electricity provider is should be simple. In practice, it often is not. Many Texans confuse their electricity company with their local utility, especially when reviewing bills, dealing with outages, or trying to lower their rate.

How to quickly find your electricity provider in Texas

Texas electricity operates with two separate entities: the electricity provider and the local utility. While they work together, they serve different roles. The steps below focus specifically on identifying your electricity provider.

• Check your electric bill
• Check your email inbox
• Call your regional utility company (ex: Oncor or CenterPoint)

Look at your current electric bill

Your electricity provider’s name is listed prominently on your bill, usually near the top or alongside your account summary. This is the company that:

• Sets your electricity rate
• Sends your bill
• Manages your contract and plan terms

Below is an example of an electricity bill from BKV Energy, where you see our name and logo in the top left of the bill and at the bottom left:

Many bills also include separate line items labeled as utility or TDSP charges, which can cause confusion. These charges do not mean the utility is your electricity provider. They are pass-through delivery fees.

Check your email or online customer portal

If you cannot find a bill, search your email for:

• Enrollment confirmations
• Welcome emails
• Contract or renewal notices

Most electricity providers also offer online account portals where your provider name, plan type, and contract dates are clearly displayed.

Call your local utility if you still can’t find the provider

If you have no access to bills or emails, your local utility can confirm which electricity provider is associated with your meter. Utilities manage service records and can see which provider is active at your address. Reference our chart below showing all Texas-based utilities with their contact information and service areas:

Why Texans often confuse their utility company with their electricity provider

This confusion is common and understandable. Utilities handle the physical infrastructure, while electricity providers handle billing and plans. Because both appear on your bill and are involved in service delivery, the distinction is not always obvious.

Typical reasons for confusion include:

• Calling the provider during an outage, when the utility handles repairs
• Seeing utility charges listed on a provider-issued bill
• Assuming the company that owns power lines also sets electricity rates
• Hearing different company names used interchangeably

Texas operates in a deregulated electricity market, which allows customers to choose their provider while utilities continue managing delivery.

What to do once you know your electricity provider

Once you have identified your provider, the next steps depend on your situation.

If you need billing or account help

For questions about:

• Your rate
• Plan details
• Contract terms
• Payments or usage

You should contact your electricity provider directly. Having your account number and plan name available will speed up the process.

If the issue is an outage, repair, or meter problem

Outages, downed lines, meter issues, and service interruptions are handled by your local utility, not your electricity provider. Providers cannot restore power or repair infrastructure.

If your lights are out, contacting the utility is the fastest path to resolution.

If your electricity rate is high or your contract is ending

This is often the point where Texans start reevaluating their provider. If your bill feels unpredictable, renewal pricing jumps significantly, or your plan includes unnecessary fees, it may be time to compare options.

BKV Energy is designed for customers who want simple, transparent electricity plans without gimmicks. While not the focus of this guide, it is worth reviewing providers that prioritize clear pricing and customer-first features, especially as your contract approaches renewal. When it makes sense to switch electricity providers

Switching providers is common in Texas and often driven by:

• High renewal rates
• Confusing bills or unclear plan terms
• Limited customer support
• Fees that were not obvious at signup

Evaluating providers before your contract ends gives you more control and helps avoid automatic rollovers into less favorable pricing. We’ve built a comparison tool that lets you see how BKV Energy’s pricing stacks up against major electricity providers. Enter your ZIP code and click Compare Plans to view the most up-to-date rates in your area.

Still can’t identify your electricity provider? Try these resources

Many Texans aren’t sure who their electricity provider is due to overlapping bills, utilities, and service responsibilities. If you’re still unsure, the steps below will help you identify your provider quickly and confidently.

1. Check your electricity bill to find the company that sets your rate and sends your bill.
2. Search your email or customer portal for enrollment confirmations or renewal notices.
3. Contact your local utility (TDSP) and ask which electricity provider is active at your address.
4. Review your plan once identified to decide whether your current provider still meets your needs.

These steps will help most Texans quickly confirm who supplies their electricity and determine what actions to take next.
